Abstract:

Banks play an important role in reducing information asymmetry in the United States and also play a role in Japanese and German corporate governance. The system of corporate governance in South Africa is similar to that of Japan. This paper investigates whether banks in South Africa play similar roles to overseas banks. It is not clear from the results what role, if any, banks play in reducing information asymmetry and agency problems in South Africa.
