Widely used procedures for determining the required number of observations and for making inferences in work sampling, based on the properties of simple random samples with replacement, are incorrect and potentially misleading. An alternative approach to the problems of sample size determination and inference is presented which takes into account the nature of dependence of the observations in work sampling.
