Abstract:

The paper presents an integrated approach for generating models for production design, planning and control on the environment of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (hereafter, FMS). It describes the types of data that are required and the input/output relations among the different subsystems that are included in the general approach. The subsystems may be used in two modes: they may be independent pieces of software, but they may also form part of an integrated system. It is believed that the second mode is, generally speaking, the most useful one. The subsystems can be classified in the following two types: generative subsystems and evaluative subsystems. The generative subsystems (typically, based on mathematical programming) produce different alternatives of production models, giving the most important targets and constraints of the FMS production problem; they use only deterministic data and work on an aggregated environment. The evaluative subsystems (typically, based on simulation) do not produce any solution to the problem, in the sense that they do not provide any model; but they use deterministic and probabilistic data in a des-aggregated model, such that they analyze the performance and implications of the production model that is provided either by the generative subsystems or directly by the planner.
