In this article OPT is reviewed in terms of how it relates to MRP II, a framework which makes it easier to understand. OPT offers some important additions to the field of detailed shop scheduling and to linkages with the MPS; it also raises some important philosophical issues for manufacturing firms. Many OPT approaches can be integrated into existing MRP II software.
