Location modeling has benefited from well formulated planning problems and increased capabilities in computing power. This has enabled planners to solve fairly large and complex location planning problems using general purpose mathematical programming software as well as special purpose solution procedures. Given current capabilities, additional issues can be considered in problem representation, such as increased spatial definition. The need for addressing such issues arises from several sources, one prominent source being the nature of environmental concerns that must be accounted for in locational planning and analysis. This is particularly true for locating undesirable facilities. This paper presents methods for defining greater spatial control in location planning models without significantly altering the formulation structure of the original planning model.
