This article presents a dynamic programming methodology for the solution of the two-dimensional inverse Stefan design problem (ISDP). It is aimed particularly at the calculation of the boundary heat flux in a body that solidifies with a desired freezing-front motion. Such problems are of particular technological significance considering that the freezing-front motion is related directly to the quality of castings.
