An interative approach which simultaneously finds the number and the location of depots, generates vehicle routes and determines the composition of the vehicle fleet is proposed. This integrated system uses two recently developed heuristics; one for the location problem and the other for the multi depot routing problem. Computational results based on test problems ranging in size from 50 to 199 customers, 1 to 5 depots, and 1 to 3 different vehicle capacities are presented with encouraging results.
