In this paper we consider the problem of optimal packing of small rectangles within a larger rectangle. The topic consists of a detailed investigation of equivalence and dominance of packing patterns. Several kinds of equivalence and dominance relations are defined and discussed with respect to computational amount and practical applicability. Three of them are also compared by numerical tests.
