This paper discusses a number of basic concepts that are important for the design of scheduling systems for packaging products in the process industry. The theoretical principles and the practical insights are based on nine case studies from process industry companies. It is shown how the concepts are used for the design of a scheduling support system for a packaging department of a tobacco company.
