We investigate the potential diversion of freight traffic from road to a new rail service in Western Europe. The research aims to predict broad estimates of the traffic diverting to the rail service using a network model and algorithms which optimise the use of time and hence cost for each journey. Traffic diversion is evaluated using a multinomial logit model which allocates volume across the set of shortest paths relevant to a given journey. Results from a case study are presented.
