This paper describes a new approach in calculating the optimal size of the time buffer which is used to accommodate disruptions in production processes and provide maximum productivity of capacity constrained resources (CCR). The problem is formulated in terms of single-server finite queue. The new approach is based on identifying the optimal number of units waiting in the line (the optimal size of the time buffer) that will maintain the highest operational profits while protecting CCRs from becoming idle. Sensitivity analysis of the derived results can help to schedule production at CCRs.
