Abstract:

This paper discusses causality as characterized in system dynamics and KSIM models, placing special emphasis on points raised in an earlier paper by Burns and Marcy. The authors critically analyze various observations made by Burns and Marcy and maintain that the Forrester methodology provides a much broader framework for causality characterization. It is further suggested that a KSIM model should use the various diagramming aids available in system dynamics methodology for the problem conceptualization and boundary-fixing stages.
