A naive comparison of artificial neural networks (NNs) and statistical methods is offered. The philosophical differences and the practical and mathematical similarities between the two approaches are highlighted. The interconnections between the two fields are illustrated on a notional neural network. A pattern recognition example shows how both fields, NN and statistics, can benefit from each other.
