Abstract:

Decision making using models is an iterative process involving the modification, elaboration and refinement of models. Operational scenarios, requirements and assumptions underlying models often evolve over time, necessitating reformulation. Further, many decisions and trade-offs are made that affect the model components. Under these circumstances, it is essential to provide traceability of models to the various components that affect their creation and maintenance. We present a framework for developing model traceability. We describe a prototype decision support system that supports the representation of and reasoning with traceability information. Intelligent decision support for various stakeholders in model development and management is illustrated in the areas of knowledge acquisition and navigation, knowledge access, model evolution, design review, and knowledge integration.
