This article is an examination of work-load smoothing and due-date assignment decisions in a simulation model which integrates the planning and scheduling systems. The results indicate that the capability of the planning system to adjust the work load on the shop floor, and to incorporate shop information in assigning due dates, is important for improving shop performance.
