Expert systems are becoming one of the main approaches in solving engineering problems. This paper discusses the reasons for applying expert systems in hydraulic systems and presents the HydroPro expert system, a PC-based consultancy tool that is intended to capture the experience of experts in the special domain of fault diagnosis in hydraulic systems. This expert system has been developed using the KnowledgePro expert system development tool which runs under the Microsoft Windows environment.
