Discrete event simulation as well as simulation in general is an area within management science and operations research which is highly recognized in practice. Accordingly, developing simulation tools is largely influenced from business needs. This paper presents an application oriented classification scheme for simulation tools. Respective characteristics may be a valuable guideline for potential users and support their tool selection. Therefore, functionality and economic aspects are included. As a side-effect the current potential of simulation systems is documented. Two representative examples are put into the framework of the given classification scheme.
