The paper examines the dimensions and a few relevant tools for evaluating manufacturing performance. The key features used in this paper include multi-dimensionality of manufacturing performance and competitive context of performance evaluation (i.e. emphasising realistic reference points). The concepts discussed are subsequently illustrated through an application to a set of Indian automotive component manufacturing units. Two of the approaches have been presented in the literature before while a third is being discussed for the first time in the manufacturing context. A comparative review of the suggested approaches have also be included.
