Abstract:

The University of Sussex is fortunate in being sited near the South coast of England in what is officially designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is then, hardly surprising that matters to do with the environment, conservation and an empathy with our ecosystem feature strongly in the work of the University and its degree programme. This article highlights the common interest that has arisen for biologists and mathematicians in ESS, short for Evolutionarily Stable Strategy. It also points to the value that mathematics might have in deterring expedinture on futile research.
