One of the most important uses of numerical methods in nuclear engineering is in the calculation of reactor properties based on the multigroup formulation of diffusion theory. The diffusion equation is elliptic. A numerical method to solve this equation, which is based on a splitting scheme with a bicubic spline function is described. Results obtained in test cases indicated that this method may be of sufficient accuracy and simplicity for implementation in nuclear reactor-simulator computer codes.
