Fuel consumption costs comprise a significant component of vehicle operating costs and as such are taken into account in the evaluation of road network and traffic performance improvement schemes. To meet this need a set of models have recently been developed at the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) to be used in conjunction with road traffic models for fuel estimation purposes. They are derived from an instantaneous relationship that equates the fuel consumption rate to power-related requirements by integrating over vehicle space-time trajectories and aggregating vehicle fleet components as appropriate for the level of detail incorporated in the traffic model.
