An idealized model of the tidal generation is presented. Power is generated by the head across a barrage, with machinery characteristics capable of being represented by elementary functions. The energy produced depends on the manner in which the flow through the barrage is controlled: the energy is maximized using dynamic programming. Results are presented for machinery whose efficiency is constant and for machinery whose efficiency depends only on flow rate.
