Abstract:

Broad classes of queueing models that have embedded Markov renewal processes of M/G/1 or GI/M/1-type have been analyzed by matrix-analytic methods. The earlier results of that methodology are discussed, respectively, in the 1989 and 1981 books by Neuts. The paper surveys the developments since the publication of these books, discusses some of the varied applications of the methods, and outlines the current research trends. Some open problems are formulated.
