The increase in reliability of a coherent system due to the addition of a redundant element to a component is expressed as a function of the Birnbaum reliability importance of that component. An analog of the pivotal decomposition formula for the increase in reliability is given. Upper bounds are derived for the increase in the mean time to failure (MTTF) of the system. Series and parallel systems are considered.
