This paper presents a methodology to decompose an aggregate energy usage index into a number of constituent indices, each one of which measures the effect of some major contributing factor such as the output mix (structural change), the energy mix and technology choice. The methodology is implemented to Greek manufacturing, from 1970 to 1989. Issues of measurement and interpretation are discussed and conclusions drawn.
