In this paper the present aim is to highlight some of the key landmarks on the map which documents the terrain of database design. The purpose is to use this as a means of indicating the benefits of using the database approach in the computer based modelling process. The authors define the concept of a database and data model and distinguish between the relational data model and so-called semantic data models. This leads us to a discussion of the process of database design and the core stages in the design process. The discipline of this approach has much to offer the Operational Research OR modeller. Finally the authors consider developments in the field of object-oriented design and ask whether these will bring together the parallel activities of designing computer systems for control and those for prediction.
