Abstract:

This paper studies the effect of government incentives on computerisation effectiveness in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Singpaore. It reports the findings of an empirical study comparing computerisation effectiveness of 33 SMEs which have computerised with government incentives with 34 SMEs which have computerised without government incentives. The first finding is that both groups of SMEs have effective computerisation. However, SMEs which computerised with government incentives did not have more effective computerisation than SMEs which computerised without government incentives. The second finding is that government incentives have a positive influence on the diffusion of computerisation. SMEs which sought government incentives would probably not have computerised without such incentives or would not have been as effective.
