Many papers have discussed the measurement of manufacturing flexibility recently; most have been theoretical. This paper approaches the problem by collecting empirical data and applying factor analysis in an attempt to measure three dimensions of flexibility: mix, new product, and modification. The results of that analysis and the implications for future research on manufacturing flexibility are described.
