Products and parts have traditionally been designed without considering the operations aspect of their manufacture. With the advances in concurrent engineering, schedulability of products and parts has become an important design issue. In this paper, five design rules aimed at improving schedulability of products and parts are formulated. The impact of each design rule on the quality of the schedule is measured with the makespan and average machine utilization. The design rules are substantiated with numerical results.
