Abstract:

In this commentary, the authors advocate the use of location models to assess or even specify technologies for hazardous materials logistics. They argue that the existing technologies for toxic waste disposal-landfills and incinerators-have dictated the terms of the public debate and the evolution of the present models. The authors then describe some alternative solar technologies for recycling toxic waste, with different implications for siting. Location science can be used proactively to envision how a new technology could restructure the spatial system dealing with toxic waste.
