A new optimization method for structures at large displacements is proposed and applied to simple bar structures in this paper. In the method, the unknown height as a function of the axial coordinate of the beam depends on four parameters which are found numerically by an Adaptive Random Search method. The total volume of material in the beam is specified. A penalty objective function deals with the nonlinearity. Some numerical results are presented, discussed and compared with a numerical solution by Kamat and Mesquita.
