This paper surveys the literature on the cutting stock problem, also known as the trim-loss problem, mainly for the two-dimensional case. Special attention is paid to the methodologies and the practical aspects. Related problems, such as the assortment problem, bin packing problem, pallet loading problem and VLSI placement problem, are also discussed.
