The problem of effective production and material planning has given rise to many techniques, including material requirements planning, manufacture resource planning, a variety of finite capacity scheduling methods and just in time. In this article, an objective function is proposed, which forms a basis for comparing different techniques, and a simulation study is reported in which various techniques are compared. The results favour due date scheduling with both capacity and materials constraints.
