American manufacturing industries are making unprecedented and rapid changes in respose to increasing international competition. New low-working-inventory manufacturing systems, more rapid product innovation, greater product variety, and the strategic and tactical use of the manufacturing learning curve are all changes management scientists need to understand. The industry’s capability for change and employees’ abilities to support change determine how fast such changes can be introduced and absorbed.
