Innovation is a necessary major component of the rapid changes currently going on in American industrial companies, particularly in some large ones that have gotten into serious difficulties. The various types of innovation are placed in a taxonomy in which each class has distinctive characteristics and specific organizational and managerial requirements. Historical examples are also used to illustrate the various types of innovation and employee difficulties in adapting to change are discussed.
