Decision Support Systems (DSS) is the primary computer tool for manufacturing planning and control. It supplies manufacturing with alternatives and ranges. This article describes how DSS and MIS can be integrated throughout the factory from strategic planning down to shop floor control. It does this by discussing the total flow of information necessary for such an integration. This information flow is discussed step by step so that the MIS/DSS interfaces can be discussed. The article then describes some of the mathematical and software tools that are available through DSS. This type of information integration, supported by DSS tools, is critical if the modern day, leading edge factory is to function smoothly. The article then discusses the potential of future technological enhancements like Expert Systems, Artificial Intelligence, and Computer Integrated Manufacturing.
