In the author’s journey in understanding and appreciating West Churchman’s writings, three ideas have been distilled from a small selection of Chruchman’s writings relevant to the practice of management science. By reconstructing these ideas and by putting them in the broad context of Churchman’s contributions, the author traces the impact of Churchman’s philosophy on the study of organizations and their purposes.
