The focus of the paper is on the discussion of hierarchical approaches and models for FMS production planning. Contributions from the operations research/management science community to strategic, tactical and operational planning problems are considered. Special attention is paid to the use of mathematical programming tools for tactical and operational problems. Suggestions for further reading are given.
