Modern Traffic Management Systems are envisaged as Decision Support Systems assisting traffic managers in making decisions attempting to balance traffic demand and the supply capacity of the road network. Operational Research OR Models play a crucial role in the conception and architecture of such systems. The aim of this paper is to present an overall view of the structure of modern Traffic Management Systems, showing how its conception is strongly connected to Operational Research OR methodology, discuss the role Operational Research OR Models in such systems and illustrate that role with examples of Optimization and Simulation Models.
