This paper discusses how total productivity management (TPM) could be applied to improve the effectiveness of a maintenance float system. TPM, as introduced here, is based on the growing interest by world-class manufacturers to adopt total quality management (TQM) practices in maintenance operations. This paper shows that TPM could help reduce the cost of maintenance operations. It shows how the analytic hierarchy process could be applied with simulation metamodels to obtain an ‘optimal’ solution to the maintenance float problem.
