The scheduling of freight trains over single-line track with crossing loops requires the determination of where and when trains should cross. The Dynamic Rescheduling System described in this paper schedules future train movements to minimise the overall cost of train lateness and energy consumption. Nonlinear programming and discrete network methods may be used to provide the train controller with a continually updated crossing schedule that reflects the actual state and performance of trains on the network.
