A dynamic programming formulation is used to develop a method of calculating the contribution, in turns, made by each player to the team’s score in a game of one-day cricket. The advantages of such measures over the currently used statistics are outlined as well as their possible use to choose ‘man of the match’ award winners, to rank the best batsmen and bowlers and to aid selectors of one-day sides. Possible extensions to this work are also discussed.
