After a brief review of the nature of inventory holding costs in both an operations research and finance framework, the paper explores assessing the proper level of financial holding costs based on a capital asset pricing model. The difficulties associated with measuring the degree of risk imputed by the market on a firm’s investment in inventories are discussed. It then reports on the results of a survey of New Zealand manufacturing firms for assessing this risk directly.
