Flexibility is one of four basic dimensions of a manufacturing strategy, the others being quality, dependability and cost. Of these, flexibility is usually considered to be the last steps towards manufacturing excellence. This paper examines different types of flexibility, various means for achieving flexibility and the effect on profitability, distinguishing between the effect on sales revenue, cost and assets.
