While problems involving location of facilities, which can be represented as points, have been sufficiently studied in many cases, most of the corresponding ones for the location of facilities such as highways or communication subnetworks have only been considered during the last ten years and open problems often appear. This paper is devoted to the second type of location problem. After the introduction of the already known theoretical and computational results, their possible applications are reviewed, and future directions of research are suggested.
