Tabu search is a metaheuristic which has been applied to a wide variety of non-convex problems. It provides a mechanism for escaping from a locally optimum solution by allowing non-decreasing moves. Cycling is prevented by keeping a ‘tabu’ list of recent moves which are not permitted. The method has been applied to create high quality exam schedules at a medium sized university.
