How useful, to the implementation of MS/OR models are the widely used Belbin and Margerison-McCann approaches to team effectiveness? These approaches are supported by networks of management consultants throughout the world. This paper briefly reviews the literature on implementation and finds negligible reference to the many roles of members of a MS/OR implementation team. Then Belgin’s approach to team effectiveness is summarised, and its implications for MS/OR professionals identified. Next, Margerison-McCann’s approach to team effectiveness is summarised and found to be somewhat similar to Belbin’s. Then the paper finds that both approaches are inadequate in group orientation and in the first and last stages of a project’s life. Finally, the paper notes that teams must continuously ‘learn’ during all project stages, with the learning incorporating the two different learning styles of individuals. In conclusion, the two approaches appear to be useful starting platforms for understanding how MS/OR implementation teams work.
