Abstract:

This paper deals with the cost-benefit analysis of a system with two production stations connected in series. A buffer of finite capacity is provided in between the stations. The input to station 1 follows a Poisson process. The output of station 1 forms the input to station 2. The service time distribution of station 1 is arbitrary whereas that of station 2 follows exponential law. Explicit expressions for (1) the expected busy periods of the two stations in [0,t] and (2) expected number of jobs completed by the two stations in [0,t] are obtained, and a cost-benefit analysis is carried out.
