This paper proposes a categorization scheme for database management system (DBMS) technology. It also defines the context and technologies of DBMS, which consists of technologies related to (1) Organization and personnel training, (2) Hardware and software, (3) Data management, (4) User services, and (5) Evaluation. The paper then analyzes the current status and problems of DBMS in Japan, within this framework. The data is based on results derived through postal questionnaires, a sample of a cross section of 218 data processing communities in industrial, financial, educational and governmental organizations and in-depth interviews. Finally, the authors consider the future DBMS technology.
