For the control of container transports at the seaport terminal of the Hamburger Hafen and Lagerhaus AG a method of optimising the ways of Straddle Carriers was developed and implemented at the truck operating area. The optimisation system is a module of a superior control system for the straddle carrier operation to minimise routes and number of straddle carriers. The optimisation routine was integrated into an application using data radio transmission for the communication of transport orders to the straddle carriers. The optimisation system had to fulfill the conditions of a realtime application because the short communication times in data radio transmission could not be affected. With the use of the optimisation routine the empty drives were reduced by 13%.
